about cropdata

The CROP project

The CROP project at Justus-Liebig University of Gießen, Germany models the impact of weather extremes and compound events on crops. We develop and use crop specific indices for droughts, heatwaves and their compounds as well as process based crop models. The aim of the CROP project is to develop innovative approaches for a better understanding of the impact of extreme weather events on crops in Germany and Europe in order to develop and improve agro-climatic services in the near future. CROP generates high-resolution datasets for crop yields, extreme crop events such as crop failures, and maps for phenological phases and agricultural practices, as well as a wide range of index and model-based datasets.

Why we created this platform

Cropdata.de is a platform that provides various crop data products free of charge and under a Creative Common license for research projects and interested citizens. Through our research on extreme weather events such as droughts, heavy rainfall and heat waves and their impact on harvests in Germany, we found that there were hardly any good datasets available on agricultural data. This platform provides agricultural yield data for the years 1989 to 2020 for the ten most important crops in Germany in a variety of formats (csv and NetCDF). In order to make the data accessible to a larger audience also outside the scientific community, we developed the cropdata-dashboard on which data on the productivity of different crops can be viewed.

How was the data set assembled?

This section will soon contain an interactive story map of how the data set was created. We are also working on a detailed peer-reviewed publication that will show the data gathering and assembly process in detail.
